Marketing is an overarching area that infiltrates all areas of our lives and provides us with a greater insight into the human psyche and trends prevalent throughout society. Working at an outsourced marketing agency has provided me with an abundance of experience and information about the business world, that will translate throughout the rest of my career.

During my time as a marketing intern for Marketing Eye, I have had the privilege of receiving real-life work experience and utilising all the tools I have received at university in real-life applications. Not only have I learnt a great deal about marketing, but I have learnt even more about myself and my capabilities in taking on new challenges and roles.

Reflecting on my experience, today I’ll be talking about the 5 most important lessons I learned during my first internship, working for an outsourced marketing agency.

With the onset of COVID-19, there have been significant lifestyle and working changes including social distancing and other pandemic measures. Given humans are naturally social creatures, the sudden changes caused by the pandemic have caused a severe cultural shock. For employees specifically, the widespread shift to working from home (WFH) and loss of face-to-face contact can threaten to dissolve company cultures, and leaders must now develop an action plan to keep culture alive!

In our day and age, we are seeing constant shifts in our traditional workplace cultures and environments, as more people work from the comfort of their homes. Following the devastating effects of the COVID-19 outbreak, more people have moved to working completely remotely and imposed restrictions have left companies and the overall employee morale in an unsteady state. Thus, in amidst these challenging times, adopting and maintaining a solid workplace culture for a smooth transition into remote working is essential to the fundamental survival of any successful business.

With most millennials now well into adulthood and transitioning into leadership roles, we are seeing a younger generation is now taking over, Gen Z. While this generation still dominate the market, we will soon see an influx of Gen Z workers entering the workforce. Covid-19 has considerably shifted opportunities for many young people. Gen Y was able to graduate from University and enter the workforce with ease while Gen Z face considerable hurdles while getting a foot in the door to their dream jobs.

To have a job today, we are amongst the more fortunate. With devastating effects of COVID causing recession in many economies, the employment market has fallen to the lowest in many years. With the recent lockdown in Melbourne, our Marketing Eye office has utilised the time to do an office renovation. There have been many reasons for this, but mostly because no-one is in the office for 6 entire weeks and it is the perfect opportunity to not only rethink our business but also the environment where we work.
